I have this headcanon that one day, when they’re very old, and Hermione’s memories are fading (and she thinks that’s fitting considering), Harry writes her biography so her memories will always be there, for everyone in the Wizarding World to read, and he calls the book Hermione Granger: Brilliant But Scary and everyone in Hogwarts is required to read it their first year.

It’s the only time he ever writes about what happened, ever puts it into the world, and he makes Hermione the hero because he never believed all that Chosen One crap (well, except before the dance and Hermione had smacked that out of him).  He’d fallen into too many traps, had made too many mistakes, had believed too many lies, had failed on so many levels that he saw The Prophecy for what it really was: a curse.  A curse that had murdered his parents, a curse that had stolen Sirius from him and Dumbledore, too.  A curse that had killed Cedric and Fred and Mad-Eye and Lupin and Tonks and Snape and too many other people who didn’t deserve to die.

No, he wasn’t the hero of the story.  He never had been.

So when he finally sits down to write it all out, it’s not so he can tell What Really Happened or for sensationalist or nostalgic reasons.  It’s not for him at all.  Hermione’s memories are fading and he can do something, however small, to stem the inexorable tide of that, so he does.  He writes a book about his best friend and how she saved him and the world a thousand times over.  He writes the book so her grandchildren’s grandchildren will know what she did and who she was and what she sacrificed.  He writes the book so everyone will know how a little girl with frizzy hair and long teeth and too many books and not enough friends saved them all.

The prologue is short and true.  He believes it to the rock bottom of his heart.

It reads:  “I wouldn’t have lasted two days without her.”

Like…holy shit? I have absolutely no recollection of writing either of those headcanons above. Not one.

Reading them gave me chills.
